  5. Following is some information that will help you optimally use 
  6. Central Point's PC Tools version 7 with Quarterdeck products.
  7.  
  8. Using PC Tools 7 with QEMM-386 5.1 - 6.0
  9. ========================================
  10. Q: Can the PC-Tools utilities be loaded high?
  11.  
  12. A: Yes, some of them can but not all of them. QEMM-386 can load the 
  13. SWAP programs high, if you use this feature of PC Tools. This would 
  14. free up 15K of conventional memory.  PC Shell and Desktop need at 
  15. least 400K to initialize before going resident.
  16.   
  17. This makes loading them high impossible because the TOTAL amount of 
  18. memory areas between 640K and 1024K is only 384K - and some of that 
  19. is always in use.  See the section about DESQview for alternatives.
  20.  
  21. Deskcon, Mirror, PC-Cache, or VDEFEND can LOADHI if enough High RAM 
  22. is available.
  23.  
  24. DATAMON and COMMUTE load themselves high into UMBs if there is space 
  25. available between 640 and 1024K.  This may cause problems for QEMM's 
  26. Optimize program.  You can disable this feature of DATAMON with /LOW 
  27. (load in low memory) and COMMUTE /NU (no upper memory).  Both Datamon 
  28. and Commute use over 300K each to initialize and will not LOADHI.

  30. Thus, if you use them, the DATAMON and COMMUTE lines in your 
  31. AUTOEXEC.BAT file should look like this...

  33. C:\PCTOOLS\DATAMON /LOW 
  34. C:\PCTOOLS\COMMUTE /NU
  35.  
  36. After running Optimize, you can remove these parameters and let the 
  37. programs try to use their own method to load into whatever High RAM 
  38. is left over.
  39.  
  40. If you have chosen to run Shell or Desktop in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, 
  41. they will be invoked as usual during the Optimize process. Simply 
  42. exit Shell or Desktop (the F3 Key exits) to allow Optimize to 
  43. continue.

  46. Q: What is the best way to set up PC-Cache?
  47.  
  48. A: PC-Cache should be run in XMS Memory.  This is particularly 
  49. necessary if you are a Microsoft Windows 3.0 user or using the 
  50. Stealth feature of QEMM 6.0.  
  51.  
  52. If you find it necessary to run the cache in Expanded, use the QEMM 
  53. parameter DiskBuffFrame=10. (The number 10 is chosen arbitrarily; 
  54. smaller numbers increase conventional memory, whereas larger numbers 
  55. may improve performance.) This will increase QEMM's usage of 
  56. conventional memory but will allow QEMM to buffer direct writes to 
  57. the Page Frame while in Steath mode or when using Windows 3.0. PC-
  58. Cache performs direct writes to the Page Frame.
  59.  
  60. Delayed Writes should be disabled when running Optimize or if you are 
  61. planning to use the DESQview environment.  Add /WRITE=OFF to the PC-
  62. Cache command line.

  65. Using PC-Tools 7 with DESQview and DESQview 386
  66. ===============================================
  67. Running PC Tools programs inside DESQview has several advantages to 
  68. using them by themselves, namely that other programs will continue to 
  69. run in background when working in PC Tools, you have the ability to 
  70. Mark and Transfer information easily between programs without having 
  71. to use the PC tools Clipboard and finally, you can have "instant" 
  72. access to other programs without having to wait for PC Tools to swap 
  73. them into and out of memory.

  75. Q: How do I install PC-Tools in DESQview?
  76.  
  77. A: You should be able to select PC Tools Shell or PC Tools Desktop 
  78. from the "Add a Program" menu.  If you are using DV 2.3 or earlier 
  79. you should run Change a Program and increase the field "Maximum 
  80. Program Memory Size" to 470.
  81.  
  82. If DESQview is your primary environment, you should stay with the 
  83. default of Text Mode, and 25 Line display.
  84.  
  85. If you have already installed PC Tools with the Graphical Fonts, you 
  86. can run PCCONFIG and select TEXT mode and 25 Lines.  You can also 
  87. disable PC Tools mouse support from PCCONFIG as well, thus allowing 
  88. you to pop up the DV menu with the mouse.

  91. Q: Why do my DV screens and borders look strange when I run PC Tools 
  92. programs?
  93.  
  94. A: PC Tools modifies the text fonts on your video graphics adapter in 
  95. a manner that DESQview cannot detect.  This will alter the borders on 
  96. your DESQview windows and menus.  Their alternate fonts can be 
  97. suppressed with /NF (No font switch) on the startup command line when 
  98. the programs are invoked.
  99.  
  100. For example if you find that running VIEW in a DV DOS window causes 
  101. screen fonts to change, try VIEW /NF.
  102.  
  103. Unfortunately, once the fonts have been changed in DV, you must exit 
  104. and restart DV to restore the correct fonts.
  105.  
  106. Q: Characters are blinking when I run PC Tools programs in DV.  How can 
  107. I stop this from occurring?
  108.  
  109. A: If you get blinking letters after hitting the DESQ key, you can 
  110. rerun PCCONFIG and choose non-high intensity colors.  The blinking 
  111. should go away when the PC Tools program is brought back to the 
  112. foreground in DV.  
  113.  
  114. Or you may wish to tolerate the background blinking if you prefer 
  115. high intensity colors in the PC Tools window, and "Hide" the window 
  116. when not in use - that way you won't be distracted by the blinking.  
  117. Use the Rearrange, Hide command from the DESQview menu. 
  118.  
  119. The DESQview Pallette program can be used to force DESQview to use 
  120. high intensity colors by selecting "Blink Enable" to make it stop 
  121. blinking (the two choices are to "blink" or "use high intensity 
  122. colors"). Make sure Save the Pallette setup if you want this change 
  123. to be permanent.

  126. Q:  What PC Tools programs cannot be run in DESQview?
  127.  
  128. A:  PC-Format detects DV and will not run.  Try FORMAT! instead as 
  129. DOS's FORMAT.COM gets renamed by PC Tools installation to 
  130. FORMAT!.COM. 
  131. COMPRESS will not run if it detects DV.  Run it outside DESQview; 
  132. otherwise you might be using a file that is trying to be moved in the 
  133. compression process - this can't be done!

  135. Q: Why did the DV mouse cursor disappear after installing PC TOOLS 7?
  136.  
  137. A: DATAMON's disk access light feature will interfere with the DV 
  138. Mouse.  DV users should deactivate this feature with /LIGHT- on the 
  139. DATAMON startup command line.
